The port of Rapallo suffers  in the 16th century from the incursions of barbaresques. It is therefore natural that the world of sailors and pirates fascinates Luciano Bottaro. His pencil gives life to Aroldo the Buccaneer, Captain Bomba, the moss Tim and many other funambulists sailors furrowing an improbable Caribbean Sea. Pepito was born in 1952. It was quickly adopted by the French publisher Sagédition, which published from 1954 an eponymous magazine. Fighter for justice, the privateer controls the ship The Peanut and its crew of eccentric sailors, lovers of rum and tafia, ducats and duplicates, Lieutenant Crochette, the Bosco Ventempoupe, Hake, Bec-de-Fer, Stockfish ... Their adventures take place in the imaginary Caribbean, somewhere between Easter Island and Hispaniola, and more precisely at Las Ananas, owned by King Alonzo XXXIV, headed by his Ventripotence Governor Hernandez de la Banana. Wearing the Jolly Roger, Pepito is faithful to the libertarian ideal of the gentlemen of fortune and ridicules the inept representatives of authority, whether they are king, officers, nobles, officials, doctors or scientists, all as stupid as greedy, starting with the incompetent and corrupt Governor Banana. Bottaro gives here an often ironic, always cheerful and burlesque, close to the commedia dell'arte, stories of Stevenson or Salgari, and the great movies they inspired in the 1940s and 1950s, from Captain Blood to Treasure island. So, sailors, hoist the sails and head for Surprise Island.
